Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Choir in Residence?

A Choir in Residence is a visiting choir that assumes the singing responsibilities at a cathedral for a full week. This includes performing all regular services, such as Evensong and Sunday Eucharist, in place of the cathedral’s resident choir.

This July, the Christ Church Short Hills (CCSH) choir has been invited to serve as Choir in Residence at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a significant honor to be selected and to lead worship on a global stage.

Where else has the CCSH choir been invited to serve as Choir in Residence?

The CCSH choir has previously served as Choir in Residence at:

2016: Bristol Cathedral

2023: Salisbury Cathedral

What must a choir do to prepare for a residency?

To be invited, a choir must submit an audition tape for consideration. UK cathedrals typically fill about 10 weeks of residencies each summer, with choirs from around the world competing for these slots. Being selected is a significant honor.

Once accepted, the CCSH choir spends several months preparing nearly 50 pieces of music for the residency. Dr. Andrew Moore often selects works by American composers to showcase during these services. While in residence, the choir rehearses daily and leads eight services.

What is a typical day for the choir during a residency?

Each morning begins with a rehearsal at the cathedral (timeliness is critical—never arrive late!). After rehearsal, choir members have time to explore the city and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, the choir returns to the cathedral for a second rehearsal before leading the Evensong service. Before the service, choir members robe and line up in processional order, standing quietly as the organ begins and the Verger leads the procession. Walking the central aisle of a vast cathedral while singing, holding music, and navigating steps can feel both exhilarating and intimidating!

Who pays for the CCSH choir and clergy to travel and serve as Choir in Residence?

Choir Members: Members of the choir pay their own travel expenses for a residency.

Clergy and Staff: CCSH covers the cost for clergy and staff who serve during the residency.

Additional Professional Singers: To support our mission, additional professional singers join us. These individuals take personal vacation time to participate. While they are not paid to sing, their travel costs are covered through a combination of private donations, church funds, and fundraising.

Why are additional voices needed to augment the CCSH choir?

While the CCSH choir provides a beautiful sound for our church services, singing in a large cathedral requires additional vocal support. Cathedrals are vast spaces that demand a fuller, more resonant sound. To meet this challenge and perform at a level that matches the setting, each section of the choir is enhanced with professional singers.

Why are we fundraising for this trip?

For previous residencies in 2016 and 2023, private donations helped cover the costs for additional singers. This year, we are inviting everyone in the parish to participate in a unique fundraising event, featuring Scottish decor, food, Scotch, and music, to share in the excitement of this experience.

Reminder!

The Christ Church Parish Choir is open to all individuals, from middle school age and older. Anyone interested in sharing their gifts in worship through music is welcome to join. Consider trying it out for a week or two to see if it’s the right fit for you!
